We Are Jesus | Unreleased Song Debut | Sophie B. Hawkins

Released April 4, 2021

My friend Charles sent me pictures of The Cross being carried through Central Park on Good Friday. I am not “religious” in any trained way, my parents thankfully didn’t push the construct of religious belief on us kids growing up, yet, throughout my life, in my songs, dreams and paintings, appear powerful imagery from biblical stories and characters. I have tried to change the lyrics, for want of understanding what they mean without the use of metaphors so widely interpreted, but I can’t find better, more true replacements. So, I’m going with the original lyrics as they come through me, and the emotional feeling the images provoke in me.

The truth of it is, I often dream, write and paint in images from the sophisticated Goddess worshipping societies which existed quite fruitfully more than ten thousand years ago, and were destroyed by the violent Northern tribes which brought the patriarchal monotheism which dominates, often cruelly, today.

In fact, I sense the evolution and survival of humanity is circling back in the direction of reclaiming the sensible, functional, inclusive, compassionate, and nature-connected female, and I use this word to represent an attitude rather than a gender, worshipping global tribe. It is clear that the female characters in all religions are being reinterpreted and shown to children in a new, regal light.

Jesus, to me, is the body of a man with the heart and soul of a woman. Perhaps Jesus doesn’t need a gender, or a religion to make his message resonate forever. Jesus is forgiveness, compassion, and love. His name gives me hope of healing. That’s why I can’t replace it in my song.

This song is about wanting to be understood, and wanting to make a deeper connection based on new ideas.

Slow
If you want to know my heart
No I’m not turning back
I’m tired
Of scuffling down these beaten tracks alone
And playing just my part
Mamma I’m still whistling the melodies you rocked me by though
Time
Has changed every line
Every story has two sides
And I want to fill your heart with mine
This can be
A better world to live in
When words we speak
Lead us to an understanding
And care for thought
Can turn our anger to forgiveness
‘Cause we all must bear the Cross
We are Jesus
Rise
To the visions you have seen
Who in hell can tell you how to live your life and where to find your dreams
Whose slate is clean
Listen with your heart, not with your will, and you may be fulfilled
This can be
A better world to live in
When words we speak
Lead us to an understanding
And care for thought
Can turn our anger to forgiveness
‘Cause we all must bear the Cross
We are Jesus
