Interesting facts about this track:

Will defeated Adam and it seems he completed his task and the story ends here. It's just that ... something feels familiar. When Will hears someone whistle a familiar tune, he turns around and realises something he wasn't able to recall before. He is watching himself walking over the Westminster Bridge right before he woke up on the street, completely void of any memory (see 'Demons Shelter Within'). Just when 'current Will' tries to approach '1879 Will', an extremely bright flash of light captures them both. Will feels as if his body is being torn apart, fibre by fibre. He sees the other Will undergoing the same thing and sees both their bodies melt and merge into one. He is released from the light and falls to the pavement in pure exhaustion. The bright light vanishes as swiftly as it appeared.

In every other incarnation cycle, this is the moment we are back at 'Demons Shelter Within', with Will waking up on the bridge, not remembering anything at all.
Only in this cycle, the last one in the chainreaction, Will remembers everything and it drives him insane. So here, we find ourselves at 'Prophet Set To Witness' where William takes to the streets to proclaim all his knowledge, only to be incarcerated in the asylum later on, where he tries to convince his sister Audrey of all he has witnessed.

On this song, the spoken words on the verses are done by Sven (Deckers) and Ian handles the clean vocals on the chorus once again.

Track written when Ian was heavily into Soilwork's “Figure Number Five” album.

Together with Ashes, this is Ian’s favourite track on the album. Also one of the last tracks to be written, I find this one has the most creative ideas. Also featuring my favourite solo, which was dubbed "the Bon Jovi" solo :-)

After the release, some unidentified scoundrel had put the acoustic guitar part starting at 1:36 on the Ultimate Metal forum, claiming it was leaked material from the upcoming Opeth album (Watershed). A very colourful discussion ensued 😊

0:17 – Demons Shelter Within Theme
1:36 – Guitar swells idea came from Death's "Perennial Quest" outro
2:00 – the Venetian mandolin effect came from 3 different high tremolo picking guitar parts
3:10 – Did I mention I was into Soilwork at the time?
3:33 – Roughly the same riff as in Incognation (4:47) especially the transitionary guitar licks at the end of the riff.
5:59 - Demons Shelter Within Theme returns for the final time.

Lyrics:

Dread holding me under
In the darkest waters of confusion
The air breathes like rotting earth
As a victor, I have never been dying as much

Yet, this familiar scenery seems incomplete
Is it the whispering of the night
Or the waters cold gaze
That takes me back to a far-flung past?

I don't know what to think
What to see or what to believe
Something's out of place or out of time
Dissonant echoes paint a nauseating scene:

Life is seeping from this corpse
A crimson stream between the paving stones
And the eyes that stare back at me
Are numbed with death

Drowning in tidal waves
Of uncontrollable thoughts
Reflections of the demons
That shelter within me

A silhouette distinguishes
From the shadows of dusk
It beckons me, it spells my name
Save me…..

As it draws near,
A voice whistles a familiar tune
It's footsteps raise my heartbeat to their pace
I've been here before…

Distance shortens to an unbearable recognition
Our eyes meet, Time collapses
Breath is riven from our lungs
It was me…

Save me - I'm falling
Into a - into a white void
Save me - I'm falling
Seeing what - I cannot believe

And so another circuit
Perpetuates the chain
When the endling merges
Into one AGAIN

The incarnation process
Now can recommence
Release the energy
In (a) sulphur incense

I've let my mind to witness to see
The blueprints of a greater design
A patchwork of incarnations
Like shackles in a Chainreaction
Releasing energy for...
For whom actually?
I couldn't say…it is too abstract
The incognation is far too much for me to bare

And so this shackle failed to re-initialise
Now memories instead have risen from ashes to flesh
The chain reaction is saturated

Save me - I'm falling
Into a - complete omniscience
Save me - I'm falling
Professing - to the blinded ones
