Daniel Hernandez, the New York rapper known as Tekashi 6ix9ine, faced sentencing today in Manhattan. 6ix9ine was facing potential prison time for violating the terms of a plea agreement stemming from his 2015 arrest for the use of a child in a sexual performance. As Pitchfork reports, despite the D.A.’s recommendation that he serve three years and register as a sex offender, Judge Felicia A. Mennin sentenced the rapper to four years’ probation and 1,000 hours community service.
In the initial 2015 case, 6ix9ine pled guilty to uploading videos of himself performing sexual acts with a 13-year-old girl. He was 18 at the time the footage was recorded. The guilty plea got him probation under strict conditions: He had to get his GED, do community service, and not break the law again before his sentencing. Sentencing was originally scheduled for 2017 but was pushed back multiple times due to 6ix9ine not getting his GED. In the interim, he’s been arrested twice, first for allegedly assaulting a police officer in Bed-Stuy, then on an outstanding warrant for choking a 16-year-old in Houston.
As part of the terms of the sentence, 6ix9ine is prohibited from posting or reposting sexually explicit or violent images of women or children. He will not have to register as a sex offender.
UPDATE: During 6ix9ine’s celebration after the hearing, his bodyguard was reportedly shot. According to law enforcement sources speaking to TMZ, 6ix9ine was at a restaurant in Midtown Manhattan meeting with an executive from 10k Projects Records. When the exec’s bodyguard turned away 6ix9ne’s entourage, saying only the rapper could enter the restaurant without his security, his people protested and an argument broke out. During the conflict, a third party reportedly walked up and fired four shots, hitting the rapper’s bodyguard in the stomach. The bodyguard was transported to the hospital.
Earlier this year 6ix9ine was involved in a scuffle in Brooklyn that landed him in the hospital. Around the same time he was investigated for potential connections to a shooting aimed at Chief Keef in NYC.
