Maggie Rose has played the Grand Ole Opry more than 100 times, but you won’t necessarily recognize overt twang in her delivery. The Nashville resident, who’s been doing business on Music Row for years, has a broad scope that makes room for soul and rock and pop, enhancing her impact, and making it hard to turn away from her work. Guess that kind of enviable vision is no surprise from a singer who kicked off her career covering “Use Somebody” by Kings of Leon. Rose is also an artist who knows how to blend blues inflections and funk beats into some of the catchiest tunes around. You could hear it on 2018’s ‘Change the Whole Thing,’ and it became even clearer on 2021’s ‘Have a Seat.’ Now her most eloquent project yet has arrived, and her intentions have been clarified further. ‘No One Gets Out Alive’ picks up where Shelby Lynne and Rita Coolidge left off. Through its inventive arrangements you can hear Rose enjoying a valuable stylistic breadth that makes room for both singer-songwriter sensitivity and, oh, let’s say Stevie Nicks sass. Her “Thinking Of You” performance is a marvel of temperament. She gets dramatic while still keeping her cool.
