We were lucky enough to see Pete Seeger perform live in Woodstock, NY a few years before he passed away. That performance has always stuck with us as an example of how a strong song and a dedicated song leader can get a room full of people singing with spirit (even if the song leader, Pete at age 90, was losing his legendary voice). This experience led us to write a few call and response songs, and “If You Want A Song” was one of them. We believe that family music isn’t just about entertainment, it’s about empowerment, participation, and breaking down the barriers between performer and audience. So, “If you want a song, you gotta sing.” And the same thing goes with social and political engagement; “If you want change, you gotta change.” Life’s a conversation, a back and forth, a call and response. Pete taught us that.
Singing connects us to our families, communities and those who came before us. It gives us an opportunity to be creative and express ourselves. It requires us to be vulnerable and proves that there is strength in doing so. So sing to the sunrise and sing to the moon. Sing with your kids and sing with your neighbors. Sometimes it just takes singing a song with one another to remind us that we’re all family.
