Adagio for Strings and Soul by Steven Halpern and David Darling

David Darling was a gifted cellist and Grammy® winning recording artist who performed with the Paul Winter Consort in the 1970s, which is when we first met. I waited over 20 years for him to join me in the recording studio in February 2009. “Adagio for Strings and Soul” was the highlight of that session. Pay particular attention to the elevational shift you can feel when he adds a second melodic line to accompany himself.

Beginning in 2014, I was guided to add new layers of ethereal keyboard textures to several of the original arrangements, and totally re-orchestrated several of his solo tracks as well. The release of our magnificent collaboration was delayed by his unexpected passing in 2021, and then by the tragic fires in Maui in October 2023.

“Adagio for Lahaina” is another soul-touching track on the album. It includes songs of the humpbacked whales that visit the waters off Lahaina, where I experienced a profound close encounter in 2005.
