George's Journal - Day 76: Beaches to Birthdays

March 17th, 2024

Today began with a burst of sunshine at our Airbnb, fueling our hopes for a final beach day. Eagerly, Kathleen and I packed up to seize the sand and surf. Yet, as fate would have it, dark clouds rolled in just as we zipped up our bags—a seemingly scripted twist by Mother Nature.

Undeterred by the brooding sky, we ventured out for one last ocean dip before my return to the USA. The cool embrace of the waves was a defiant joy against the grey backdrop. And just as we dried off, the sun peeked out, its timing almost mischievous.

Our coastal farewell continued as we checked out and headed to Burleigh Heads. While Kathleen enjoyed a relaxing massage, I reconnected with my best mate since grade 8, Matt Scully. He introduced me to the wonders of Paddock Bakery, where I indulged in a decadent cookies and cream croissant with ice cream—truly a sweet moment to cherish.

Scully then led me to a coastal lookout, offering a sweeping panorama of the coastline. Standing there, I soaked in the beauty, a poignant reminder of home’s eternal allure.

The day didn't end there; upon returning to Brisbane, we joined Emma’s birthday bash for Jay's girlfriend, Chloe. The festivities spilled into the street with a spirited handball competition, rekindling high school memories and igniting laughter under the setting sun.

The evening rounded off with a communal dinner and the joyous celebration of Chloe's birthday, complete with cake and cheers.

Exhausted but fulfilled, I signed off the day and welcomed a well-earned rest, my heart full of the day’s simple pleasures and enduring friendships.

Until tomorrow,

G.Shep xx
